Information for pastors and doctors

Dear Pastors:

You are already aware that abortion is wrong and hurtful. But perhaps you are uncertain how to address the issue in a sensitive way considering the number of post-abortive women who are undoubtedly among your congregation. The problem is that silence on the topic of abortion can contribute to more abortions.

About 70% of American women having abortions identify themselves as Christian, 43% reported attending church at least once a month, and 20% attended at least once a week.

Christian women are well aware that pregnancy outside of marriage constitutes public evidence of sexual sin. According to a survey of post-abortive women, the most typical reactions they were expecting or had experienced from the local church at the time of their decision were “judgmental” or “condemning.”

There are three messages that churches can convey to help prevent abortion.

Dear Doctors:

I am confident that you care about your patients and want to allow them informed consent, but I also realize that your busy schedule may make that difficult. I would like to make sure you are aware of several facts important for your patients using contraception or considering abortion, and offer free or low-cost resources to make it easier to pass on that information to your patients.

1. Serious health risks. Especially with long term use, hormones increase the risks for blood clots, breast and other cancers, depression, and autoimmune diseases.

2. Possibility of conceiving a child who then dies from inability to implant.

3. Fertility Awareness Based Methods: There are safe, effective, and scientifically bases methods to prevent pregnancy, without health risks or preventing implantation.
